Singapura Images Postcard: National Theatre
by Lee Xin Li
"The National Theatre, designed by local architectural firm, Alfred Wong Partnership, opened on 8th August 1963. The theatre, with its iconic five-pointed façade was one of performance venues for my dad during his stint as a musician. Despite being torn down in 1986, it remained to be a national icon like the old National Library in the minds of many Singaporeans. A small scale replica of the façade was erected by Dr. Lai Chee Kien as part of the Biennale 2013. What if the theatre still stands today?"
